ed. art now releases a new artwork by Cecilia Ömalm, produced exclusively for us. Sea of Tranquility is a work created by using the sun's rays; a picture of a moon that is not a moon, not a place, but an eye, a thought or a state of being.

Sea of Tranquility is the name of one of the largest craters on the visible side of the moon. In her work, Cecilia Ömalm often uses a room, place or a state of being as a starting point. She has been fascinated by this non-sea and the moon as a mysterious and poetically loaded place. In this digitally processed version of the moon, in takes the shape of a large, blank iris–the eye that sees the observer.

- I have returned to my photographic background to create something in the early method called cyanotype, primarily used by architects from the mid-1800s to copy drawings, says Cecilia Ömalm.

The cyanotype paper has been exposed to direct sunlight through a modern glass negative, which has been pressed against the light-sensitive paper. The paper is coated with iron salts which emit a blue color upon contact with UV light, and when the paper is rinsed with water a deep tone emerges and continues to come forth for a day. The alchemical process results in shades from cyan to Prussian blue.

Each copy of the edition varies in intensity depending on the timing and quality of the light when it was exposed. On the back of each work, the artist has noted the longitude, the latitude, the date, the weather and the time interval as a link to the location and the conditions that created each work.
