Leif Elggren has been active as a conceptual artist since the late 1970s, and works with performance, text, audio, video, and installation art. Recurring themes are the symbols and relations of power, spirituality, absurdities and existential questions of life and death. On several occasions during the 2000s, he has worked on the theme of viruses and infectious diseases.
Along with Carl Michael von Hausswolff, he is the founder of the micro-nation the Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland (KREV) where he, like Hausswolff, possesses the title of king.
