drawing robot

We’ve received new works by Patrick Wagner! Each work is unique and is created by using a so called "polargraph".

A polargraph is a drawing robot developed by Sandy Noble from Scotland. It's a fairly simple machine that uses a pen, some motors and strings, a small arduino brain and a double-triangulation coordinate system to draw the images fed to it. The result becomes analogous drawings created with a machine handwriting.

Patrick Wagner often uses a recurring theme in his artistry, a theme where contemporary art meets the medieval. This is expressed in the form of his skeleton figures, depicted in various death-dance motifs. You can also pair the modern drawing robot with how Wagner's artistic process is similar to the creation practice of medieval book illustrations, where the foundation consists of drawings that are later hand-colored or in some cases are provided with gold-leafs. He describes that he "enjoys this updated antique approach enormously, and it's fun to see the little robot labour on a large-format drawing."
