Mikael Wahrby "Stockholm - Sergels Square"

Mikael Wahrby's Stockholm series are, just like his other artworks, frozen moments. Still lifes in the truest sense of the word.

In the artwork Sergels torg, Mikael Wahrby has depicted one of Stockholm's most visited places. In the foreground, a tourist with a suitcase stands on Plattan's classic triangle pattern in black and white. The cultural festival tent is being erected or packed down. The tram enters the picture with the text "Your dream city. How does it look?". In the middle of the picture, one of Stockholm's most classic sculptural works of art can be seen, the glass obelisk "Crystal, vertical accent in glass and steel". This paper artwork in grayscale is full of details. You discover something new every time you look at the picture. Perhaps you, as a viewer, can see that Mikael Wahrby has changed the perspective of the city space and perhaps even moved a building?

About Mikael Wahrby

Mikael Wahrby has become known as a master of depicting light and shadow, often in detailed, black and white, prints. He brings forth the objects and the rooms themselves, giving them life, often through dramatic lighting and sophisticated shading patterns. In 2014 he was awarded the Nils G. Stenqvist's memory fund scholarship for his "love for the opportunities of the copper plate" and his "love of the motives, as well as to the craft itself."

Mikael Wahrby (b. 1952, Stockholm) is something of an institution in Swedish printmaking. In 1977, he graduated from the Royal Institute of Art and has since been working in this very special field of his, of which 10 years were spent as a lector at the institution where he once studied.
