Nicolai Howalt
Through the lens of his camera, Nicolai Howalt explores time, light, the concepts of life and becoming, materiality and immateriality. His work encompasses documentary, conceptual and installation art, but always with photography as a medium. He often works in series where, instead of creating a defining moment, he builds complex psychological stories. The Herbarium series depicts crystallized images of species that have invaded the Danish flora. Converted into intaglio prints, they take on an almost ghostly appearance, like fossils yet disconnected from time and space.
Howalt is educated at the Fatamorgana Danish School of Art Photography and his work can be found in many museum collections, including the Maison Europeenne de Photographie, Paris (FR), The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (CA) and the Museum of Fine Art Houston, TX (USA).
