gnome and troll

We have received two new, wondrous prints by multi-artist Finn Öhlund. Tomte (Gnome) and Troll are related in color and format, but are produced in two – in time and space – different artistic contexts. The aesthetics of the images are the result of experimenting with different pigments and beer as a binder. They are created in a kind of painterly yoga exercise. Thereafter, they are printed as risograph prints in two and four colors, respectively, at the stencil printing house Knust in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

A risograph is a Japanese copier from the 1980s that has become very popular in artist circles. The copier is loaded with stencils and each color has its own drum and is printed in its own layer. This means that the result is much more than a regular copy and the technology leaves plenty of room for experimentation.
