membrane

There are now twelve new, unique cyanotypes from the series Membrane by Christina Henrysson at ed-art.se. A membrane is a "selective barrier", a boundary that allows some things to pass and shuts others out. In Henrysson's pictures, it is the fine-meshed net that forms the barrier between us and what is in the depth of the picture. The bright white contrasts with the deep blue color and brings to mind galaxies or, why not, deep sea images.

Cyanotype is a photographic method from the 19th century that has been used artistically but also practically. The classic architectural blueprints are created using this process where paper is treated with ferric acids that are UV sensitive. When they are exposed to UV light and developed in water, the blue color appears on the paper. The parts of the paper that have been protected from UV light retain the white color of the paper.

Christina Henrysson skillfully uses the inherent properties of the cyanotype to produce her atmospheric images. On each cyanotype paper, she has arranged the attributes she places on the paper in different ways, making each print unique.

Christina Henrysson often works in an interaction between photography and painting or printmaking, where themes such as transparency, movement and light are recurring elements. She studied at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, with an additional year specializing in printmaking, and is currently active in Stockholm.
