ed.itions: söderberg

In December, ed. launches its third ed.itions cooperation. This time, it is the artist Fredrik Söderberg who has produced a lithograph together with printmaker Daniel Andersson.

Fredrik Söderberg is known for his richly detailed watercolor paintings charting the ”other” story, the one that runs parallel alongside the established history. Movements and groups that are in the grey areas capture the artist's interest.

- A society gets the extremes it deserves, and the tendencies that can be found a bit to the side tell us a lot about the big picture.

During the past 15 years, Fredrik Söderberg has devoted himself to studying the reform groups and spiritually oriented associations in the wake of Germanism, appearing in Germany, Austria and Switzerland towards the end of the 1800s. These movement later on branched out into the world, transforming into, among others, the psychedelic movement in California. The groups were a reaction to industrialization and modern society's emergence, a search back to something authentic and original.

Söderberg has portrayed his travels in a recent book that contains paintings, drawings and texts.

- The lithograh is a kind of distillation of the book, a collage of images and figures taken from the time, be it caricatures or pictures from the media. Wagner, who was an extremely important person to these alternative movements, is in there for example.

The lithograph along with the book now becomes a kind of closing of the work that lasted almost 15 years.

Working with the lithographic method has been fun and challenging.

- I like to have a new set of rules to relate to, it makes me look at the paintings in a new way. I've always worked graphically, but the printmaking has its own expression that is unique and has a value in itself. I also like the availability of prints, there is something sympathetic in that you can enjoy art without it costing so much.

Fredrik Söderberg (b. 1972) graduated from the arts department of the College of Arts, Crafts and Design, in 2000 and is one of his generation's foremost artists. He has exhibited extensively both in Sweden and abroad, and his works can be found in the collections of the Moderna Museet and Magasin III. His name became known to a larger number in 2011 when he designed a limited edition bottle for Absolut vodka.
