Matthias van Arkel works in the borderland between painting and sculpture, and is associated with intensely colourful work, usually made of silicone rubber. In his prints, he experiments with the working methods of printmaking–printing layer upon layer to thus reach the final image. On the etchings at ed-art.se the image area is divided into three fields, where the two on the left are joined together to form the field on the right hand side. The titles refer to the expression and temperament of the lines.
van Arkel was educated at the College of Arts, Craft and Design and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and is today based in Stockholm and New York. His works can be found in the collections of, among others, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and SOKO Art Collection in Finland. van Arkel has completed a series of public commissions, including the monumental work Micro/Macro World in Jacobsberg’s bus terminal outside of Stoockholm.
